Recap! October’s MASKS Reading

October’s MASKS reading was fantastic. This whole Sideshow series is shaping up to be a wonderful series, I’m so thrilled to be a part of it.

First up was Mardi Jaskot, who read a prose piece the audience loved.

Next was Meitar “maymay” Moscovitz, who talked about sexual freedom activism and his work with MaleSubmissionArt.com. If you haven’t checked out his weekly live online podcast, KinkOnTap.com, do! It happens every Sunday night.

BB Rydell from Seattle was up next, and read the smutty story “Call Me Sir.” Then, of course, the “sir” jokes commenced for the rest of the night. You know a story made an impact when it becomes an instant meme!

After the break, Sarah Schulman read about dating in LA and navigating the dyke world.

Natalie E. Illum came in from DC to do some spoken word poetry for us and read some beautifully moving pieces off the page. I adore her work and was so honored she could make it up here to read! Watch for her collaboration with LAVA in Brooklyn in December.

Kelli Dunham was last but not least, reading about her time in the convent. She recently found a letter she wrote home from 15 years ago and added her own colorful commentary to her younger self. I particularly liked the line, “it looked like a nun bomb exploded in here,” when talking about nap time. Genius.

Maymay also streamed the entire night, and recorded video. Thanks maymay! I’m working on uploading it to share with all of you—watch for that in the next few days!

Butch Voices Speak! Sideshow/Queer Memoir Mash-Up

Sideshow teamed up with Queer Memoir to do a Butch Voices NYC Conference related show at Bluestockings last weekend, and it was a huge success. There were at least a hundred people packed into the bookstore, and the pieces were fantastic.

Genne Murphy and Cheryl B. stepped in with Kelli Dunham and myself to host the show.

First up was Kelli Dunham, to open the show with a Queer Memoir set, reading a story about being a kid with a complicated gender in Wisconsin farmland.

Then came Ryann Makenzi Holmes, one of the folks behind the bklynboihood calendar (which you should really get ahold of, if you don’t have it already. Kristen and I picked one up after the reading and it’s beautiful.

Morgan Mann Willis read an impressive piece including secrets and confessions about butch identity and sex. Hot!

Then we switched gears and went into the Sideshow part of the evening. I didn’t get a shot of Cheryl, but rest assured she looked hot.

First up was Renair Amin, telling a story about getting an STI test and the awfulness that can be public health. Health care for all!

Kestryl Cael read a great piece about emotions, crying, and sharing feelings.

I (Sinclair) closed out the evening with a new butch poem I’ve been working on, tentatively titled Unsolicited Advice to a New Butch. I’ll be reading it at the Butch Voices Portland Gender/Queer spoken word show this next weekend, too!

I didn’t get a shot of myself, but Syd London was there and shot the whole thing professionally—and I got a few shots of Syd, too:

And I will of course post the shots Syd took as soon as they’re ready.

Thanks to everyone for coming out and listening to these butch voices speak!

Back to School: Gay Adolescence—September’s Sideshow Recap

The September show was one of the best we’ve seen—I know, I say that every time, but each time is amazing in it’s own way. This time, we had five readers talking about their experiences with school, growing up, and coming out again.

Loren Krywanczyk kicked off the night with a piece about transsexuals as teachers, and what it’s like to teach middle school.

Tanya Paperny was up next with a piece about coming to a femme identity, and what it was like to buy a couple fancy dresses.

Rachel Simon’s poetry had us laughing and nodding along.

Cheryl B. read next from her memoir in progress about leaving home, escaping New Jersey, and living on her own in New York City. I’ve heard what she read before, at her memoir show at Bluestockings last year, but the story is still poignant and interesting.

Theadora Fisher came down from Boston to read, and talked about what it was like to be gay (but not really out) in high school, and the beginning of the story of marrying her high school sweetheart. I love hearing her read her own work!

Last but not least, Melissa Febos read about Facebook stalking her first love. She was fantastic.

Thanks to Bluestockings Bookstore who provided us with books for the evening, and thanks to all the readers and folks who came out to listen!
